Modeling - Take two

I had the privilege of photographing some great models on Sunday. This was my second time photographing models in a group atmosphere. I really enjoy the group photo sessions because I always learn something new to enable me to better photograph my clients. I ordered some transmitters which will enable me to photograph people with the flash off the camera. This creates a wonderful effect and I look forward to receiving them.

Catching up on Blogging

I apologize; I have been remiss in my blogging duties.

The Alaskan summer has flown by and we are in the rainy season. I have been busy building up my clientele and enjoying portrait photography. I have taken photos of children, pets and families this summer as well as a backyard wedding.

The Alaska State Fair starts next week and I am hoping to get some really cool photos of the carnival, events and just people walking about.

2011 Iditarod Ceremonial Start – March 5, 2011

The 2011 Iditarod started on a bright sunny day in downtown Anchorage, Alaska. Fourth Avenue was lined with people watching as the mushers started. There was the sound of dog howls and barks in the air and the announcer telling about each of the mushers as they began the race to Nome. Several mushers had to control their teams as they raced around the Fourth Avenue/ Cordova corner, being careful not to overturn the sled. People cheered and mushers threw booties to the kids. With the sun and the warm weather, fun was had by all.

Spring is on its way!

I feel that spring will soon be here. Yes, it is true that the temperature was zero this morning, but we have been climbing into the high teens during the day. In addition, there is heat coming from the sunshine. I looked at my thermostat this afternoon and it was reading in the high 40’s with the sun beating on it.

Another sign that spring is on its way are the longer daylight hours. The sun is rising at 8:44 in the morning but actually at 8 am this morning it was dawn. The sun doesn’t set until 5:46 in the evening, but it is still dusky outside after that. It is so nice to have the light. It puts people in a better mood and it is definitely a sign that spring is on its way.

Another sure sign that spring is on its way is the Fur Rondy Carnival and the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Next week is the beginning of Fur Rondy and there will be lots of events around Anchorage in addition to the dog sled races which will take place on February 25th through the 27th. There will be a parade, snow sculptures, outhouse races and more. On March 5th is the start of the greatest race on Earth, the Iditarod. The race will begin in downtown Anchorage on Fourth Avenue at 10 a.m. and then there will be a restart the following day in Willow, Alaska.

There is plenty of snow on the mountains but there have been numerous avalanches, which is also a sign that spring is on it’s way.

Loving the daylight, love the dog races and loving the heat from the sun. Spring is on its way!

Concert - Geoffrey Castle - Blue's Central - Anchorage - Alaska - February 2011

Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Geoffrey Castle concert at Blue's Central. He really rocked the house on his six string electric violin. If you haven't heard him play, I highly recommend that you go to his website and listen to a few tracks http://www.geoffreycastle.com. My favorite song was when he played the Star Spangled Banner the way Jimi Hendrix did at Woodstock. He of course didn't use his teeth to play the way Jimi did, but he did an amazing job.

Since the concert was at Blue's Central, the atmosphere was relaxed and Geoffrey walked through the crowd several times while playing. Afterwards, we were able to purchase CD's and have him autograph them.

Here are a few photos that I took that night. It was challenging to get good photos because the lighting was pretty much all red and very dim.

Senior Portraits with Katie

Yesterday I had the pleasure to do a Senior Portrait Session with Katie and her mom. We had a lot of fun, it was rather chilly but Katie did awesome.

We went out on Turnagain Arm and got some photos of her on the railroad tracks, went to McHugh Creek for some waterfall photos and then to Downtown Anchorage to get some city photos.

In my view, High School Senior portraits capture the senior as they are now, in this moment. These are photos where they are still full of dreams. I love to photograph seniors and think about years down the road, perhaps for their 10 year reunion, when they look back at that fresh faced teen they used to be and remember where they wanted to be in 10 years and compare it to real life. I know that at my 10 year high school reunion, I was still in the process of figuring out who I wanted to be. My senior dreams went through life's ups and downs and didn't all come true. It's always fun to look back at the moment and remember the good and bad times.

Buckner Building - Whittier, Alaska - A step back in time

This was the first of the major Whittier buildings. It is six stories high with two basement levels. It has over 270,000 square feet and, when first built, had housing for 1,000, as well as a cafeteria, theater, classrooms, radio station, jail, hospital, library, PX, and more -- it was rightly called "a city under one roof." However, it was totally abandoned when the Army left.

It has been abandoned for over 40 years and time has taken it's toll. The building itself is quite sturdy, the interior is another matter. When I went a couple of weekends ago there was still water everywhere, you can hear it dripping throughout the building. The ceilings are falling down as well as the light fixtures. Unfortunately, people have tagged the building and although some of the art work is nice, there are swear words, signs of the devil and witches, Marijuana, and various other sayings and symbols.

Vandals have broken anything and everythign that they could get their hands on. There were broken pieces of the sinks and toilets throughout the living quarters. It was a sad sight that a once impressive building is now in shambles. I have to say though, whomever did the tiling in the building, did a very good job because it is still on the walls and most of it is still on the floors.

Although there are reports that the building is haunted, I did not get any creepy feelings, nor did I see any ghosts.

It was an interesting place. I hope to explore it again before time and vandals take further toll on the building.

Valdez, Alaska

If you have never been to Valdez or traveled along the Richardson Highway in the fall, I highly recommend it. I had the pleasure of spending a couple of days in the Valdez area last weekend and was lucky enough to have sunny skies without any clouds and daytime temperatures in the 60's. I hiked back to the old stamp mine in Valdez, the fall colors were amazing and it was an interesting historical find. Here are just a few photos from the weekend.

Bethany - Age 4

Reflection in a Window

This is one of those random photos that you sometimes get lucky enough to get. I was actually photographing the sunset, turned around and there was this abandoned house with a sheet over the window. The sunset was reflecting so well on the window, I just had to shoot it. When I looked at it after I had downloaded it, I was very pleased with this very quickly taken photo.

Life is Fleeting

A couple of my friends died last weekend in a boating accident and it made me think of how short life can be. They were both 35 years old and enjoying life. I am happy that I have some photos of them to remember them by, not as many as I would like, but a few.

For me photos invoke memories and help you get through things. When my grandmother died, I went through all the photos from when I was born until when she died. I am so happy that I have photos with her. Photos remind me of stories or games we used to play, places we would go and just how much fun we had together.

What if something were to happen to someone you love? Would you have the photos you want to remember them by? What about photos for generations to come? Family portraits capture a moment in time that will never be granted again. People never remain the same, nor do most hang around the same location for a lifetime.

The death of my two friends really made me want to get some more photos of friends and family, where we were together and having fun. They don't have to be studio photos. Some of the best photos are candid photos that capture the personality of people. The next time you have a bbq, think about either hiring someone to take photos of everyone, or carry your camera around and have others take photos of you with friends and family.

Life is fleeting and photographs will help you to remember the precious moments.

Networking at Work

Today was an interesting day at Stewart's Photo. They have adjusted the schedule so there are four people working on Saturdays now. The morning was quite dead and I felt guilty that I wasn't being productive. We had a poor day of sales for the entire day. I blame the rainy weather and the Bear Paw festival going on in Eagle River this weekend.

The interesting part of my day was the networking. I spoke with quite a few people that I had fun talking to. There where three people from New York that were in town on a ten hour layover after staying a week in Kodiak. They were very fun to talk with and I gave them my card. Maybe they will let other's know about my website, but I would enjoy talking to them again. The girl that was in the group felt the same way I do about Photoshop. I think that photoshop is an easy way for people who may not have the skills to take good photos, to make their photos appear better. I don't use photoshop and in my opinion, I think it's cheating. I don't have the time to take to spend hours touching up photos, I want to be able to take them well to begin with. I actually spoke with three people today who agree with me about photoshop.

I also spoke with a local guy who is doing a 365 Project. The 365 Project forces him to take a photo every day and post it online. It sounds like a fun idea and I am thinking of doing it. I take a lot a photos, so I shouldn't have a problem clicking that shutter, but this will force me to think out of the box so I take a larger variety of photos.

I love working at Stewart's. I love interacting with fellow photography enthusiasts.I learn something new every time I work. I need to get out and interact more with the art community. I need to figure out a way to get my work out on display more. I need more people buying my photos either from my website or in some other venue. I need to start building my photography portrait career.

Child Portraits

I had the pleasure of doing a few child portraits last weekend. The wonderful thing about small children is that most of them do not have the fake smiles that so many adults have developed over the years. They are natural in front of the camera. I handed a little girl a bottle of bubbles, she blew a few then she raised it up and gave me a cheesy grin, she reminded me of the Statue of Liberty (after all it was Independence day weekend). I gave another little girl the bubbles, she was more into blowing the bubbles until a large butterfly flew by and she went chasing after it. They are so unpredictable that you can capture some amazing photos.

From games to goodie bags, get inspired with these creative party-planning ideas

Allison Biastock’s mother Jean was a gifted party-thrower. Biastock, now a mother herself, remembers every detail of her childhood birthdays – there was the Victorian-themed party where all the girls dressed-up and were treated to a tea party with fancy cups and saucers, little finger sandwiches, and petits fours.

The girls played old-fashioned party games that her mother researched at the library.

Then there was the Japanese-themed party: “All the girls dressed up in kimonos,” she recalls, “which were, for the most part, their moms’ old bathrobes with a scarf around the waist.” Her mother served Japanese food (though, says Biastock, “no sushi – this was the 80s”) including a cake decorated with cherry blossoms. The guests did origami and the room was festooned with paper lanterns and parasols. “It was so unique,” she remembers.

When it comes to planning a child’s party, all parents hope to pull off what Biastock’s mom did: magical memories that will last into adulthood. If you’re not a naturally gifted host, then you’ll have to learn from those who are.

A terrific party starts with your terrific child, says Connie Tracy of Designing Divas Event and Party Planners in Wasilla. She and partner Andrea Engbretsen always start with the guest of honor. “We ask a lot of questions,” Tracy says. “What’s your favorite color? What is your room like? What’s your favorite thing in it?” Your child’s own personality might be just the inspiration you need to spark your inner-party-planning genius.

If your child is of the tiara-wearing variety, Debbie Feiereisen of The Perfect Party in North Pole can help you take a princess party to the next level. A castle backdrop, princess dresses (and knights’ armor) as well as medieval table décor can all make a tried-and-true party theme something special.

A camping-themed party is good for both boys and girls, and if you’re like many Alaskans, you probably have everything you need in your garage. A khaki color palette, a couple of tents, and a campfire could set the mood. Activities could include a fishing game, camp songs, or a silly nature walk (think teddy bears in trees). Or make it a scout party and have children “earn” merit badges. When their sash gets filled, the child gets a prize like a compass, harmonica, bear bell or flashlight. The food? S’mores, trail-mix, and hot dogs cooked over the fire, of course!

Let the seasons inspire you and your guests. Plan a springtime flower party where kids decorate terra-cotta pots, plant them with blooming geraniums or impatiens, and bring home packets of seeds or gardening gloves. A winter party might take place on a sledding hill – then back home for cake and hot chocolate. What could be simpler?

Whatever your theme, says Tracy, make sure you have a clear timeline and enough fun activities planned. “Organization is so important,” she says. Two hours will seem like an awfully long time if you have a houseful of children who are bored or unsupervised. If you don’t have a plan, children will make one, she says. Instead of your games, they could end up playing “let’s jump on the furniture.” “Some parents frown on that,” she adds with a laugh.

A craft table will keep your first guests busy while the others are arriving. Depending on your party’s theme, guests can decorate paper crowns, straw cowboy hats, flip-flops or flower pots. Lunch bags that can later serve as goody-bags are inexpensive and fun to embellish. Crayons, glitter, and stickers require minimal supervision if your crowd is very young. Let the artistic juices flow or give simple directions to get the ball rolling – draw the birthday boy, for example, or a funny monster.

Another nice way to set the tone of the party early on is to give out a small accessory to each guest as they arrive – a bandana, a tiara, a magic wand, a sheriff’s badge, a pirate’s eye patch – these can all help your guests get into the spirit of the event and may help them begin interacting with each other.

Once guests arrive, your plan should be simple – “a craft, a few games, then cake, presents and maybe another game,” says Tracy. Do a ring-toss that “lassos” little plastic or stuffed horses or a beanbag toss into a pirate’s chest or fishing pond. Play “hot potato” with a horseshoe, or a glass slipper, or a soccer ball. There’s no end of ways to update tried-and-true party games.

Above all, know your audience. A princess party might not thrill little boy guests. Complicated games or elaborate crafts may perplex the early pre-school set. Older kids might want more independence and less planning. Anchorage mom Joann Mitchell keeps things simple. Most recently, she rented the bunker in Kincaid Park for her son’s birthday party. “Simon's party last fall was a hit. The kids brought their bikes and scooters and had a great time riding around inside. I think you can never remind yourself enough that kids really don't need much to have a good time,” she says. “And for boys, if it involves wheels, it's hard to go wrong.”

So start planning those memories with joy and confidence, with help or on your own. Sometimes the most expert party-planner is just a creative mom.

My State Trooper with Plane and Car photo is going to be on the cover of a book and I get photo credit. Sometimes it really pays to work for the Alaska State Troopers and having a great Colonel. One of his friends - Wayne Vance- wrote a fictional book called To Serve and Protect. We staged some photos for the cover. He picked my favorite shot from the photo shoot. It was a random photo that wasn't supposed to happen but another plane came down the runway and as it was going by, I saw a really cool angle and took the photo.

2010 Iditarod - Ceremonial Start

Saturday, March 6, 2010 was the Ceremonial Start of the 2010 Iditarod on Fourth Avenue in Anchorage, Alaska. I was able to photograph for about an hour. There were lots of people downtown for the event. The weather was wonderful, sunny and around 34 degrees. It was a wonderful day for a dog race.

I was able to obtain a Media Pass for the event. The Media Pass enabled me to go behind the ropes where the dog mushers were getting ready. I was able to meet Lance Mackey prior to the race and got a photo of him and his lead dogs. It was a very hectic time and I appreciated him taking the time so I could snap a few photos. He is currently a three time Iditarod Champion and he is going for his fourth this year.

Since I had the Media Pass, I was able to lay down in the snow next to the trail and get some really nice angles. I met up with a fellow photographer on the Fourth Avenue/ Cordova Street corner where I was able to capture the dogs as they were coming straight at us. It was a wonderful experience.

While I was unable to go to the re-start in Willow on Sunday, I feel good about the photos I was able to get on Saturday.

Seward Trip

My husband and I went to Seward for Valentine's day and President's Day. We stayed in the Holiday Inn and had a balcony room with a view overlooking the Harbor. We had sea birds swimming around in the water right below the balcony. We also had a little sea otter directly below our balcony. We chased another sea otter around the docks. This morning we had a couple of cute little crows hanging out on our balcony. We went to the Sea Life Center. I would highly recommend going if you have not yet. We got two free passes with the hotel room, and had a blast. Here are a few photos of our trip.

Photoshop

I am very much a purist when it comes to my photos. I like to capture a moment, not play with the photo so it suits me. I admit to lightening and darkening, cropping and maybe deleting a pimple.I don't feel that photoshopping a photo is a true reflection of life. If someone is not smiling in a photo, I don't cut their head out and insert another where they are. In life, things are not perfect and photos should be a reflection of life.

However, I do enjoy learning new things, so last night after I got a photo of two adorable moose, I decided to see what I could do with the background. I didn't alter the moose at all. The included photo is what I came up with. I think it is cool but obviously not a true reflection of life.

We had some very pretty sunsets last week and thankfully; the sun is setting later and later every day, so I could get some shots. I also had several visits from my favorite moose so I have included a shot of him.

We received quite a bit of snow over the weekend but it is sunny with blue skies today, so I snapped a few shots at lunch.

I entered four photos into the Fur Rondy photo competition. The judging won’t be until the end of the month but keep your fingers crossed for me.

Although I love taking scenic and wildlife photos, I have decided to specialize in People and Pet Portrait Photography for my business. I like to do most of my portraits on location so that Alaska’s beauty is the background, but I have a small studio set up in my house. Here’s hoping that business will soon be booming.

Pet Portrait Photography- Ornie's Miniatures

I went and took pet portraits of Ornie's Miniature Donkeys and Horses. They are super cute and tried to follow me around. It was hard to photograph them due to their curious nature. Sunrise/ Sunset

The daylight is gradually increasing day by day. The sunrise was at 9:33 a.m. and the sunset was at 4:54 p.m. today. I remember just last month when it was dark at 4:30 p.m. I am loving the increase of sunlight because that means that I am able to get shots of the sunset. We have been blessed with lovely sunsets the past few days. I has been clouding up today, so no spectacular sunset tonight. They are predicting snow and temperatures in the upper twenties for tomorrow.

Pet Photography

Pets are very interesting subjects for photography.

DOGS: I like to capture the sprit of the animal in my shots. If a dog is very playful and loves tennis balls, I take photos of them with tennis balls. If a dog loves to chew on bones, I make sure to get some shots of that.

CATS: Cats are very interesting creatures. Some like to just lay there and do not mind you taking photos of them, others run and hide. It’s always interesting to give them a toy filled with catnip and capture them playing.

REPTILES: Reptiles are usually interesting subjects also. They tend to freeze in place, so you can get some good shots. Either that or they remain in their cage, so there are reflections to deal with, which is not an impossible task.

The best place to take pet photos is on location. I go to where the pet is comfortable. I use either natural lighting or continuous lighting. I only use the flash if necessary and only if the pet does not mind. I will come to you and take photos of your pets, or we could meet up at a favorite park.

Cold Day in Anchorage

It was -13 at 8am this morning when I pulled into the parking lot at work. The sun was just starting to lighten the sky behind the mountains. Winter has definitely arrived in Anchorage, Alaska. It is supposed to be sunny through Friday and then the clouds are supposed to arrive making the temperatures rise into the 20's. I have a photoshoot out at Kincaid this weekend, I am hoping for clear skies but warmer temperatures. When we were out there last Sunday, it was cold and the wind was whipping.

Do you need Holiday Photos, Make-up and Jewelry for that special party, Candles to set the mood, Photographs to give as gifts, Kitchenware and Tupperware to get you organized for the New Year?

We have the one stop shopping event of the season.

When: November 14, 2009

Time: Noon until 5pm

Where: Loussac Library- conference room

• 8x10 printed photos for sale.

• Several Poster size prints available for purchase or select from a range of photos and pre-order one.

• Calendars- A calendar of my photos in a variety of themes for $24.95 - pre-order form will be available at the bazaar.

• Sign up for a family portrait session- $50 an hour and you get a CD of all your photos.
• Family portrait -taken and printed at the bazaar.

The charge is $15 per sheet or two for $25.

The portraits will be one 8x10 sheet (only one photograph style per sheet). You may choose several formats per sheet:

Nine-wallets, four 3x5, three 4x6, two 5x7 or one 8x10

Winter Wonderland

The snow has fallen and stuck. Granted it's only a couple of inches, but it's here to stay for a while. It is snowing right now and with the temperatures in the teens, it will likely stick around also. I love how it looks in the sunshine, although I would rather be somewhere where it is warm and sunny. :-)

Fall is lasting a long time this year. It is the first week of November and no snow on the ground. It is however up in the mountains. We are having mild temperatures also, only down to the thirties overall.

The fall colors are out in full force. There is snow on the mountain tops. It was 35 degrees this morning. Fall is coming to a close and winter will soon be upon us.
