Cruisin from the Coast

Good morning from foggy Cascade Locks, Oregon…home of the Bridge of the Gods.

We had a very interesting trip yesterday from Seaside to here. There was lots of rain, so I was unable to get some really good shots of the wonderful roadway but I have attached a couple. The fall foliage is just starting here, so we get to enjoy the wonderful colors all over again.

James and I have decided that we will take the backroads as much as possible throughout this trip, so we went through several small towns.

On the first part of the trip, we went through a large logging section of the state, where they have cut down the trees and planted new ones. It’s funny to see trees and bushes growing all over the place with large stumps still remaining. Some of the stumps even had little bushes and grass growing out of them. We stopped at a wonderful restaurant called Camp 18 Restaurant for lunch. The restaurant is built of logs that were hand peeled and the middle log (ridge beam) is 85 feet long and weighed 25 tons when cut and is the largest in the US. The waitress was really friendly and the food was good. You have to stop by if you are in the area, just to see the interior of this building; the front doors (4 ½ inches thick) and some of the tree trunk tables…so very cool.

We drove through the wine country section of the state. The vineyards are so pretty with their even rows of plants all turning a lovely golden color. There are tree farms, vegetable and berry farms, but not so many livestock farms as we have seen before.

Unfortunately, we were unable to avoid Portland as James would have liked (since we were pulling the trailer) so we had to maneuver our way through the skinny streets and traffic. I thought it was cool because I got to see the tram. We drove through streets filled with wonderful old houses and buildings, then James told me to put my camera down because the neighborhood was sketchy.

We went down the Historic Columbia River Highway until we hit a section that was closed. Thanks to our trusty Garmin, we found another way down, which was quite sketchy with the trailer. The road she directed us to take turned out to be a one lane, dirt road that was full of hairpin corners and fog. We made it safely down and once again got on the Historic highway. We passed several waterfalls along with Multnomah Falls, but unfortunately it was dark so after tweaking the camera settings, I finally got a photo that I liked. I should have brought my tripod and remote release with me to the falls, but it was so dark, I wasn't sure I could get a shot in the first place…oh well, we plan on staying in the area for a few more days, so I am hoping to get lots of waterfall shots.

After getting off the Historic highway, we passed a historic dam that we couldn't really see since it was dark out but, we will be visiting it too. As we got off the highway enroute to our RV Park, we passed under the Bridge of the Gods, so hopefully I can get a few photos of it too.

We arrived at our location at the Bridge of the Gods RV Park and found our spot. I slept well last night without the rain drumming and the wind howling…it was very peaceful in the fog. This morning we awoke to fog and the sound of the train in the distance. It is going to be a lovely day as long as there is no rain storm.

Have a Safe and Happy Halloween,
Until Next Time...
Rebecca
