Headed On Down the Road

Hello from Cape Disappointment, Washington which is 14 miles away from Astoria, so right near the Washington/Oregon Border. We checked into the Cape Disappointment State Campground and it is a really nice campsite, with a paved pad for the trailer, a large picnic table, fire pit and friendly wildlife.

To catch you up on what has been going on, we went to Everett while the trailer was getting hooked up with a new hitch system. We went down to the docks and found Anthony’s. We had some wonderful clam chowder, calamari and I had some Dungeness crab and shrimp gumbo. To end the meal in style, I had a Bailey’s and Chocolate Mousse dessert….nummy.

We pulled into our campsite in Olympia, Washington in the evening of Oct. 23rd. The park is surrounded by Evergreens and it smells like Christmas. The temperature is in the 40’s and the sun was trying to come out on our way there.

The next day, we made a bee-line South to Kalama, Washington where we saw the house that James’ grandparents lived in and the restaurant that his grandparents frequented. On the way back to the campground, we took the back roads instead of the highway. We saw little towns, pumpkin patches, lots of cows, horses and barns…it was a fun trip back. We stopped at Inferno’s Brick Oven Pizzeria for dinner, located in Tumwater. It was good but I liked the pizza from St. Elias Brewing Company in Soldotna better.

After getting drenched walking around the Capitol, of course the sun decided to come out. The architecture here is so much more to my liking than that of Anchorage. People actually put some thought and effort in to the buildings, so they weren’t just giant boxes of glass. I love history and that people are making efforts to ensure that these buildings and areas last for future generations.

We secured everything in the trailer and said goodbye to the Olympia campground and headed out. I convinced James that we needed to stop at the historic Tumwater Falls (I love waterfalls) and we had a pleasant walk around the Upper, Middle and Lower falls and even saw part of the Old Olympia Brewing Company building.

After the falls, we headed down the back roads until we got on the 101 Pacific Coast Highway enroute to our destination of Cape Disappointment State Campground. We passed through a bunch of little farming communities; I think I even saw some grape vines growing. We saw quite a few areas where the loggers had chopped down all the lovely trees, but they have planted new trees in their place. Once we hit the 101, we had wonderful roads that were smooth with nicely painted lines and little reflectors in the center and stakes with reflectors on the corners. We had an owl fly in front of us, which was really cool. On our way into the campground, we saw two deer and I was able to get a picture of one. It didn’t move, just made weird barking noises. We saw several raccoons driving through the campground. Once we got all set up, we had a couple of raccoons stop by to see if they could mooch something off of us. They even went so far as to open a box of soda that we had sitting on the picnic table outside, grab a soda and carry it under the table, then it punched a hole in it either with a claw or tooth, proceeded to spray itself down with soda and then ran away surprised. They are super cute, but like to hover around the campsites so keeping trash and items inside is very important.

We woke up this morning to howling winds and rain that come and go. We are near the beach and it smells like the ocean mixed with Evergreen trees.

Until Next Time…..Take Care,
Rebecca
