Hello From Bend, Oregon

Good morning from Bend, Oregon. Yesterday, we decided that we would go searching for sunshine and we found it. We didn't really go the back roads yesterday so pretty much traveled through forests and plains. The forest was tall, dark green and very rainy. The plains were amazing with light yellow grass and blue skies...that's right, blue skies..we found sunshine!!!

The woods down here are amazing; so tall and thick. As you travel through them, you smell the scent of the evergreens and think of Christmas. Unfortunately it was too cloudy and rainy for us to see Mt. Hood.

We entered the Warm Springs Indian Reservation while still in the forest. The clouds were breaking up and the sun was starting to peek through. Once we hit the plains, the sun was out and so warm and shiny, it was nice to see her again. I could almost imagine indian hunting parties riding their horses over the plains in search of the elusive Buffalo. I have never seen anything like the plains. For one thing, they are covered in yellow grass, some now yellow bushes of flowers and a few trees here and there. Way off in the distance, you can see the hills which were purple as we drove through. The whole area stinks though, not sure if it is the trees, the plants, the cows or what but it reminded us of the smell of urine. There is no way I could live in a place that smelled like urine all the time. The smell remained until we hit Madras. Anyway, back to the plains. The indian reservation starts out with a bunch of cattle farms spread out for miles. They had wire and timber fences and only stopped when we hit the valley. The valley is where you find the casinos and the town. I didn't see any teepees or historical items, just regular houses. As we were coming out of the valley we crossed the Deschutes River which was almost glasslike; James was on a mission, so we didn't stop. We got up to the tops of the Plateaus which were really interesting, with varied layers of rock and so flat on the tops. The sun was setting as we were driving into Madras, so from there on, I was unable to get any photos. However, from Madras to Bend, it was pretty much just little town after little town, so nothing really wonderful to photograph.

We pulled into the Scandia RV Park after hours, but since we had called ahead, went into the porch by the office to look for our paperwork. A really kind gentleman came out and said hello and gave us our paperwork and told us were our spot was. The park is not very picturesque and there is a Wendy's right on the other side of the fence, but the owners seem to be really friendly, the bathrooms clean, the laundry a reasonable price and it is not too expensive to stay here, so I am happy.

I would like to take a moment of silence and remember a childhood acquaintance  Brian Wardell who passed away from a heart attack. I didn't know Brian that well in high school, just that we were in Choir together but, through Facebook, we had reconnected and I had gotten to know his quirky side. It is sad that people I know from school are passing away, life seems to go by so quickly. People have told me that this journey from Alaska to Texas will be a trip of a lifetime and I hope that they are wrong. Yes, this is an amazing journey and I am enjoying spending the time with my husband and dog Chelsea as we discover new places and experience new things. However, I hope that I will do this again soon. If my dreams come true and I become a professional photographer, I would like to travel and explore as part of that profession. When we stepped on that plane enroute to Seattle, I thought of it as a start of a new life with my husband. A new life of exploration and togetherness, shared experiences and lots of laughter. I just hope that this journey keeps going and life does not stagnate once we get to Austin.   Rest in Peace Brian.

Until next time, live life to the fullest....
Rebecca
