This post is just a quick catch up as to what we have been doing.
Since I last posted...
We enjoyed San Francisco for a few days. Luckily it was sunny for the time we were there. We pulled out two days before Thanksgiving in hopes of avoiding the holiday traffic and we succeeded in that. While we were in San Francisco we enjoyed seeing the old houses, Chinatown, Lombard Street, Golden Gate Park and the Coit Tower. I love all the history in San Francisco and would love to go back. The only thing I didn't accomplish was to ride the cable car.
After San Francisco we headed to Lake Tahoe for the Thanksgiving holiday. Lots of RV parks were shut down for the season so we decided to stay at the Best Western which was right on Lake Tahoe. The hotel restaurants were wonderful, the hotel was great (except for when you take a shower the water goes from hot to cold all during the shower). Lake Tahoe was pretty. I wasn't entirely impressed with the area, granted it is "winter" there but I expected a little more than just a ski town.
After Lake Tahoe we headed to our current location of Bishop, California. I was really hoping to see Yosemite but it is closed for the season. We have been in Bishop for a couple of days and I have truly enjoyed the weather. It is a desert climate in a flat area between the mountains and oh so warm (65 F). I loved roaming around in the desert, exploring random dirt roads. We were able to drive up a dirt path into the White Mountains, which are really hilly rather than rocky. I found some rusted cans and broken bottles along with other cast offs in several areas in the desert My guess is the locals target practice in these areas since I found shotgun shells and most of the cans and such had holes throughout. I was so hoping to find a really cool old bottle, still in one piece.
There isn't a lot to do here since all the roads are closed and places are shut down for the season but, we were able to see the Ancient Bristlecone Pine trees up in the White Mountains. The road to the Bristlecone pines actually starts in Big Pine, which is 13 miles down the highway but, they are actually above Bishop once you get through the curves and climb. It was awesome to see trees that are 4000 years or so old. They don't look like they are that old as most of them are smaller than 25 feet. They are interesting trees. They don't need a lot of foliage, so most of the older trees look like they are half dead. The bark of the tree is amazing, you can see all the layers in most of them. A lot of them are twisted and gnarly but still growing. I would highly recommend going to the Ancient Bristlecone Pines if you are in the area...very cool.
That pretty much catches you up as to what we have been doing. Today we are headed to the Death Valley area, it is only in the mid to high seventies so I shouldn't melt.
Have a safe and wonderful week,
Rebecca
